Why I Built Pathfinder
My name is Valentine and I grew up in the English countryside and moved to London aged 17, convinced the film industry was where I belonged. Six years later, I realised I'd made a terrible mistake. So I moved into corporate finance. Then trade finance. Then reinsurance. The overall journey was a nightmare. Eventually, two decades of professional misery forced me to stop and completely redesign my life.
That's when I discovered the world-famous ikigai diagram with its four intersecting circles. I knew instantly what I had found. Ikigai had finally presented me with the most important professional question we can ever be asked: what beautiful path of meaning and purpose sits at the intersection of our loves, our gifts, our values, and our commercial potential?
I'd been teaching strategy to sustainability CEOs for several years, and so many of them complained of feeling demoralised, empty and unfulfilled. In response, I designed an ikigai programme and began charging £1,800 per client to take them through the ikigai process, doing all the comparative analysis by hand. It quickly became my most popular service. But my programme was slow and very expensive.
For years I fantasised about making it faster and financially accessible to everyone, especially the young. I knew what a monumental difference it would make to their lives. The Importance of Meaning
Viktor Frankl, the world-famous psychiatrist who survived four Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz, spent his life writing about and studying one question: what actually drives each human? His answer was meaning, above pleasure, above money, above status. He put it plainly: the search for meaning is the primary force in every human life.
The evidence backed him up. In a study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health at Johns Hopkins University, of nearly 8,000 students surveyed across 48 universities, 78% said their first goal in life was "finding purpose and meaning", compared with only 16% who claimed that "making a lot of money" came first.
Frankl noticed something else deeply relevant for everyone at a career crossroads. When people can't find meaning, they reach for substitutes: money, pleasure or status, and for many, that reaching turns to addiction. The substitutes never last, and pleasure can only exist as a by-product; chase it directly for its own sake, and it melts away in front of you.
In this way, a career chosen purely for the salary tends to hollow out over time, no matter how good it looks from the outside. Frankl warned particularly against two paths: doing what everyone else does (conformism), and doing what others expect of you (compliance). Both provide the illusion of safety and leave you living someone else's life.
He also explained that life works the opposite of how we usually assume: it makes demands of you rather than offering itself up to be mined for value. Asking "what is the meaning of life" means you've got the question back-to-front. Life is the one doing the asking. You are the one being asked: What is the meaning of your life? What will you contribute?
That's why Frankl believed you can only self-actualise (become your greatest, fullest self) by reaching past your own personal needs into a life path that serves something greater than you. The Power of Purpose
Abraham Maslow, the celebrated psychologist, theorised a pyramid that most of us studied at school. At the bottom sit our basic needs. The journey is about reaching the summit by fulfilling the drive to become everything you can be: to self-actualise.
Maslow observed that only a tiny proportion of humanity reach the top. The majority spend lifetimes circling the middle of the pyramid, chasing connection, security and approval, feeling something crucial is wrong, yet never truly understanding the gap.
Maslow believed purpose was every human's greatest need. Aristotle reached the same conclusion two and a half thousand years earlier. He taught that everyone has a purpose to fulfil, and that a human life flourishes only once we are dedicated to pursuing it.
The modern evidence agrees with both of them. Large longitudinal studies show that people with a clear sense of purpose live longer, recover faster, sleep better, and are far less likely to suffer heart disease, stroke and dementia.
